The value of life

A moment is all it takes for one person to pass from this world into the next.

This statement means more to me after a recent experience that I had.

As most of you know, I am a nurse. Thankfully I haven't dealt much with death in the past two years. I have only had 2 patients die and both of them were very old, surrounded by family and knocking on death's door when I met them. I only took care of them for a few hours. Yes it was sad, but I didn't let it effect me emotionally, I put it in a different compartment in my brain... the "work" compartment. I have also had a few family members pass away... all were older and sick, also very sad... but I honestly just started understanding what death really means.

I recently had an experience where I watched someone slip from this life into eternity...

The reality of this really just hit me, I let it sink in and realized the value of life.

It only takes a moment to slip into eternity.

One minute you are alive, breathing, talking, eating... the next you are gone.

Why can't we capture the reality of this in our day to day lives? I spend so much of my time looking into the future, planning, worrying... not taking this current moment into account.

I hope to live 50 or 60 more years and be surrounded by family when I slip into eternity, but the reality of it is that it could happen tomorrow, next week or in ten years.

I want my life to be one that honors my maker. I don't want to be a stagnate Christian who lives the American dream... I want to serve others and make every day and every person my mission field. I want my Lord to say "well done my good and faithful servant" when I enter into the next eternity.

My body is just a shell. A shell filled with my soul until He calls me home.

I had no idea that this person was going to meet our Maker so soon and I am sitting here tonight hoping that they are dancing and singing for our Lord in Heaven right now.

  1. Your words are so true. I am always planning "for the future" and sometimes forget to enjoy the moment. Life can change in an instant!
