How I Save--TV Edition.

We got rid of cable two years ago. When we had it then, we were paying around $150. Now we pay $16 a month for Netflix and Hulu and stream them through our Apple TV.

Most of the world has heard of Netflix, you can watch boat loads of older and newer shows and movies. It is $7.99/mo for unlimited streaming and when you sign up you get your first month free. We use this for all of the kids shows and stream it to our iPads and Apple TV.

Hulu is cool too. I can watch all of my favorite current shows the day after they air on TV. This is how I watch Grey's Anatomy, Hart of Dixie, Shark Tank, Castle and the other shows that I like... It is also $7.99/mo and if you sign up through this link you can get a free two week trial.

Then we got an HD antenna and we get all of the local channels for free if we can watch them live. This is great because we get the weather and local news.

For shows that we want to watch that aren't on Hulu or Netflix, like Survivor and The Walking Dead, we stream those through Bryan's Macbook to our Apple TV.

What is an Apple TV? It's a cool little box that costs around $100 that you can hook up to your TV that has apps that allows you to stream online content.

So there is my saving tip for today. That's another $134/mo savings that we made!

  1. I have been wanting to get rid of cable forever. My husband is not sold on the idea. I just feel like we are throwing away so much money. Thanks for sharing your tips!

  2. I didn't have cable for years and survived with Netflix and Hulu as well. The only times I missed having TV was for events like the Olympics, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the ball drop in NY on New Years.

  3. We've been thinking about cutting the cable for a while. It's definitely doable, once our contract ends with AT&T. #SITSBlogging

  4. We love our Apple TV, I love that you can pull images off your computers for slide shows ... Great for get together. #SITSBlogging

  5. Back when we were paying down debt we got rid of cable because that's the first think on every financial guru's check-list of things to eliminate. As a sports family, it ended up costing us more money. We don't really watch TV shows as much as we watch sporting events. We would go out to eat more just to watch the game. In the end we turned back on our cable and cut elsewhere.

  6. That is very smart. I know so many people that are doing that. I can't bring myself to give up cable just yet, but maybe one day.

  7. Cable TV is ridiculously expensive. We don't have a HD TV, so having the HD box wouldn't help us. These are great tips to save money!

  9. My husband and I got rid of our TV after it broke, nearly 4 years ago. I don't miss it at all and he survives by streaming his beloved soccer games online. We watch occasional shows on Netflix, but for the most part have grown accustomed to entertaining ourselves without tv. You're definitely right about the cost savings too! I've never had cable but I know it's way expensive.

  10. We totally got rid of cable almost a year ago now and we love it. I bought a simple antenna and digital converter box and now we get a couple channels for all the big stuff. Totally worth it!

  11. Yes! We haven't had regular cable in years. We do have "basic" cable, though, which consists of about 10 channels. We have Netflix and Hulu and use a Roku box. Where do you stream The Walking Dead from?! We actually purchase it through Amazon Prime so that we can watch it, but is there a free option I'm missing?

  12. Great tip! We gave up cable for Hulu and Netflix too. We use a Roku instead of Apple TV. And sometimes we purchase shows and movies through Amazon. Still cheaper than the $100+ we used to spend on cable!

  13. I can't give up cable, I just cannot. Kudos to you for doing so though! I watch way too much TV, haha.

  15. Hubby and I had a discussion about ditching our satellite TV just this week - I could live completely without it as we also have NetFlix and I prefer to binge watch my TV shows :)

  16. We are trying to decide if we should cut the cable or not. Thanks for the tips about Hulu!

  17. I want to ditch the cable so bad but my hubby loves his sports games. We have just the most basic package and internet. I will one day make it happen. Good for you guys!!

  18. I've actually never paid for cable or satellite TV. I had it when I was a kid living with my parents and then never had the money or time for it in graduate school. I save so much money without it. We do Redbox, stream things for free online, or watch things through Hulu. We've been using the antenna for regular digital TV for the past 4 years.

  19. We have Netflix and Hulu, too! We also have basic cable for $10/month, but when we do watch something, it's usually via Netflix or Hulu.

  20. That's very brave :) We do use netflix a lot, but what about current shows? Do you watch them online later or wait for the whole seasons to come out on netflix?

  21. We got rid of our cable about a year ago. I thought I'd really miss it because I might have a small addiction to the Real Housewives dramas, but I actually haven't missed it a bit! We rarely have the tv on anymore...just for the news or we use Netflix so the boys can watch a few cartoons. I'm enjoying the monthly savings for sure! #SITSblogging

  22. I've been trying to sell my family on ditching our cable. I would never give up our internet service ($45 of our $145 bill) but I really think we would be just fine between Amazon Prime, Hulu and Netflix. I need to work up a list of *must sees* from the Hubs and lay out how he could get them without cable.
