Life Verses

Before my boys were born, I "claimed" a life verse over each of them.

I wish I could say I was better about praying the verses over the boys... but until last night when I was flipping through my bible trying to remember what Rhett's was for his baby dedication I hadn't given it much thought.

Hudson's is easy for me. Hudson's life verse is Joshua 1:9. I pray it over my boys often.

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” -Joshua 1:9

I love this verse and the context of it in the Bible. Joshua is being commanded to go into the promised land after Moses' death. The Lord tells Joshua that he will be given everything that his "feet touch" and that they will be safe. Joshua is a little apprehensive, umm hello... there are a lot of scary people down there that want to kill us, a huge wall to keep us from setting foot into Jericho, oh and a HUGE river that we have to cross... but the Lord tells him to be "strong and courageous" and that he will "be with him wherever he goes".

Alright Lord, if you can protect Joshua and the Israelites, help them cross the river, knock down city walls with marching and trumpets and help the Israelites slaughter a whole city of people, I am pretty sure you can help me and guide the path of my boys.

I just love it and feel like it is such a perfect verse for (every one, really) boys.

After looking for a few minutes last night I found Rhett's life verse in my Bible.

It is dated 2/9/13 (11 days before he was born).

"Be watchful. Stand Firm in the faith. Be Courageous. Be Strong and Let all that you do be done in Love." -1 Corinthians 16:13-14

I love this so much too. All the important aspects of how to live the Christian life. I think one of the MOST important things that we can do as Christian's is to do EVERYTHING with love. Actions speak so loudly. I got cut off on the interstate on the way home from work yesterday, and the guy did it intentionally, he was weaving in and out of traffic and flipping people off who he thought were going too slow... as he got in front of me I saw that he had the "Jesus fish" sticker on his back window... umm... no wonder people get the wrong impression of us.

As I was thinking about their life verse last night, I started thinking about my own life. What is MY life verse? I guess I should ask my mom if she has a specific verse that she has prayed over me... I know that she prays for me daily and has daily for probably my whole life... So Mom, if you're reading this, remind me in case I forget to ask you.

I have a few verses that I feel like are very appropriate for where I am in life right now. The one on my Chalkboard right now is John 16:33. I love writing verses here because this chalkboard is what you see when walking in the back door. It is a great reminder.

"I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble, but take heart for I have overcome the World." -John 16:33

"For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.... To you, Lord, I called; to the Lord I cried for mercy: “What is gained if I am silenced, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it proclaim your faithfulness? Hear, Lord, and be merciful to me; Lord, be my help.” You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. Lord my God, I will praise you forever." Psalm 30:5, 10-12

What about you? Do you have a "life" verse for yourself or your kids? I'd love to hear about it!

  1. "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonains 5:16-18. This one just reminds me that no matter what you are going through, it is where you are supposed to be. Yours are great! --Joanna

  2. Phillipians 3:8
"...I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord."

    Certainly puts things into perspective.

I love the idea of having a verse for each child! How special!
